Algae & Sea
Food
The oldest living animals come
from the sea. The abundance of minerals found in the ocean
are so important to good health that it was essential to look
at this medium to complement the ingredients that A.G.M. Foods
uses in producing its probiotic products.
Chlorella
Chlorella is well-known for
its high nutritional value, it is high in chlorophyll and
nucleic acid. The cell walls have been found to be valuable,
a substructure of the cell wall contains complex polysaccharides.
Chlorella contains a greater quantity of fatty acids than
either spirulina or wild blue-green.
Dunaliella salina
Dunaliella salina offers exceptional
amounts of Vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene. It has
a high protein level. Often combined with Spirulina or other
micro-algae, it is a rich source of carotenoids which provide
fruits and vegetables their distinctive colors, odours and
tastes, we are only just discovering the unique benefits of
these substances.
Kelp
Laminaria species
Kelp contains a plethora of
minerals. Kelp also contains alginic acid. It is considered
the most completely mineralized food.
Seaweed
An important food source in
many Asian cultures, seaweed is a primitive sea plant belonging
to the algae family with origins dating back millions of years.
Japanese cuisine employs different varieties (such as Kombu,
Laver, Wakame and Nori) for many uses including soups, vegetables,
tea, sushi and as a general seasoning. The Irish are partial
to the seaweed known as Carrageen, and Agar is widely used
throughout Asia.
Seaweed spends its time absorbing
minerals and vitamins from the seawater around it. It is rich
in amino acids (tryptophan, threonine, icoleucine, lysine,
methionine, cysline, phenylalanine, tyrosine, valine, arginine,
histidine, alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine,
proline, serine). Essential nutrients are also present such
as nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sodium,
sulphur, alginic acid, laminaran, mannitol, iron, copper,
manganese, boron, zinc and iodine. It also contains natural
vitamins C, B1, B2, B7 (Niacin) B12, D, E, K, A, biotin, selenium
and folic acid.
Spirulina
Spirulina
is a blue-green algae which grows on the surface of alkaline
lakes. Extensive research has shown it to be a truly remarkable
food source with its phenomenally high protein content and
rich reserves of many vital nutrients - including vitamin
B12.
This blue-green algae is so
small that it needs a microscope to see the spring-shaped
filaments just a millimetre long and only one cell wide. It
was found on analysis to be the richest natural source of
protein yet discovered. Spirulina has a higher proportion
of protein than yeast (35%), fish and lean meat (18-20%),
or even dried egg (45%).
